About me

I am a Senior Lecturer in Filmmaking and Creative Media. I teach on a wide range of modules on both the undergraduate and postgraduate awards, specialising in sound design and production for film, performance and interactive media. I also teach radio documentary production and have taught radio drama. I am a former programme leader for Filmmaking and Creative Media and has also been programme leader for the Media Foundation Award as well as the Certificate in Digital Sound Award. I have also been an external examiner at the University of Bedfordshire and a programme moderator for the Creative Practices (FdA), University Centre Yeovil.
 
Having originally graduated with a BA (Hons) in Time Based Media from the University of the West of England, I was awarded a Masters Degree in Composition and Sonic Art by Oxford Brookes University.
 

Prior to teaching I spent many years working as youth worker in St Pauls, Bristol before beginning a career in sound and radio production, initially working as a freelance producer for regional radio and assistant news editor at Galaxy FM. Subsequently I have developed my practice to include production sound for film, sound design for theatre and have been commissioned to produce work across a wide range of genres and platforms including site specific work, dance, physical theatre and interactive performance.

Other interests include playing in various bands and spending two years living in Alaska as a North Pacific fisherman.

 
My most recent work, The Whispering Gallery (http://thewhisperinggallery.weebly.com), is an interactive ‘sound walk’ that takes real life stories and re-presents them through sound and performance and the changing landscape of a tour through the mediaeval heart of the city. Initially adopting and then subverting the form of a conventional tour, headphone wearing participants listen to a soundscape that weaves conventional narration, pre-recorded soundscapes, performance and eavesdropping as the division between incidental and scripted events begin to dissolve and passers-by perform to a new soundtrack, unifying the imagined and the real.
